Ah, Saltidos. "The Tasty One!," as the label so vividly proclaims. Though Saltidos, manufactured by El Sabroso (trans: The Sabroso), is not technically a "candy" in the strictest sense, it is indeed a snack food imported by our friendly neighbors to the south (Mexico) and is truly worthy of bad candy status. Far from being visually pleasing, Saltidos makes no qualms about the fact that it is nothing but nuggets of dried plum caked in salt. When Ben and I noticed what a healthy dose of sodium one recieved from Saltidos... well, it was clear that we had found something very special, indeed. With all of the salt that these Sabroso, uh, chunks were coated with, I found it hard to believe that they had an expiration date.

How we so fondly recall our first experience with the world's most complete source of sodium. Ben, with his girlish whines of "No dude! I'm not putting that in my mouth!" was obviously reluctant to be the instigator, leaving yours truly as the guinea pig. So, with paper towel in hand, and a sink within spitting distance, I partook of my first (and last) chunk of Saltidos.

Time stopped.

My tongue instantanously wilted, and my eyes began to water. I made two feeble attempts to bite through the brittle, brine-encrusted outer layers before my survival instincts kicked in, causing my jaw to lock open and the Sabroso chunk to involunatarily fall out of my mouth and down the drain, accompanied by a large volume of drool. While I was regaining conscienceness, Ben realized that it was his journalistic duty to also try a chunk. Before I could stop him, the fool popped a Sabroso in his mouth, and just as quickly, it popped back out.

We have since "taste tested" Saltidos on several of our friends and co-workers, and the results are consistent with our own experiences. We've yet the see anyone actually swallow a sabroso. Oh sure, many have tried. But all have failed. The legacy continues... you have been warned.
